Interim Senior Minister, Rev. Dr. Cameron Douglas’ message is, “Do You See This Woman” based on Luke 7:36 – 8:3
Overview
There are three versions of this story in the four Gospels. Mark and Matthew are most similar with the setting being in the house of Simon the leper and Jesus’ head is anointed by a nameless woman just days before his crucifixion. John’s gospel has Jesus in Lazarus’ house and Mary of Bethany anoints his feet just before his crucifixion. Luke has Jesus in Simon the Pharisee’s house very early in his ministry and a sinful woman anoints his feet.
Oddly in Luke’s account the host Pharisee is deliberately inhospitable to Jesus and the sinful woman is nothing but hospitable and lavishly caring over Jesus. The story shows a clear contrast between the “righteous” Pharisee and the “sinful” woman. It seems the point of the story is that the woman is ministering to, and being ministered by, Jesus who makes her whole. Isn’t it a good thing that Jesus eats with sinners … like you and me? Even today at the Lord’s table he ministers to you and me. Thank God.
