Scripture: Matthew 25: 1-13
Sermon Title: Running Out of Oil
Sermon Theme: This story is not really about bridesmaids or a wedding. This parable is a criticism of the religious authorities of Jesus’ day: the scribes, the Pharisees, and the priests. Their task was not to keep the temple up to date or profitable; rather they were to keep the people connected with God. When Jesus arrived they did not listen to him, they viewed him as a nuisance interfering with the temple and threatening its well-being. They had confused the means with the ends.  In their anxiety to keep their lamps burning they ran out of oil and did not welcome Jesus with joy. As followers of Christ we are called persevere in the faith until Jesus returns. This means that we are to be wise with our resources, support our congregation and its ministry, and find ways to share our gifts. Good Christian stewardship is not only wise; it is a way to connect with God, to say that we trust in our Creator, and to strengthen our faith.
